Why TBE-X5PRO?
Overview

01
Thunderbolt™ 5 storage with up to 7000 MB/s
Transfer large video projects, 3D files, and game libraries with up to 80 Gbps connection speeds and more than 7000 MB/s sequential read speeds under appropriate test conditions.

02
Single-chip architecture with JHL9480 (B2)
The Intel JHL9480 (B2) connects NVMe storage to Thunderbolt 5/4/3 and USB4 at high bandwidth. The TBE-X5PRO does not support USB 3.2/3.1/3.0/2.0 computer ports.

Frequently asked questions
You can find further answers in our Help Center.
[Compatibility] Which computers and ports are compatible with the TBE-X5PRO?
Compatible Thunderbolt 5/4/3 and USB 4 computers. USB-C alone is not sufficient: The port must support Thunderbolt or USB 4 for external PCIe storage.
[Compatibility] Which operating systems are supported?
Windows, macOS and Linux. According to the instructions: Windows 11 for TB5, Windows 10/11 for TB4, macOS 14.4 and later for TB4/USB4 and macOS 15.0 and later for TB3.
[Compatibility] Which SSDs are compatible?
M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe SSDs with M-Key or PCIe-B&M-Key, PCIe 5.0/4.0/3.0, up to 8 TB. SATA and formats 2230/2242/2260 are not supported.
[Compatibility] Does the TBE-X5PRO work with USB 3.2 or older?
No. The X5PRO supports USB4 and Thunderbolt 5/4/3, but not USB 3.2/3.1/3.0/2.0 computer ports. For older ports, choose a model with USB 3.x backward compatibility.
[Compatibility] Will a PCIe 5.0 SSD run at full PCIe 5.0 bandwidth?
No. The SSD works, but the Thunderbolt 5 connection is limited to PCIe 4.0 x4. SSD compatibility does not mean a native PCIe 5.0 x4 connection.
[Functions] Which controller does the TBE-X5PRO use?
An Intel JHL9480 (B2) for Thunderbolt and USB4. The additional USB 3.x controller of the X5MAX is not present here.
[Perfomance] What data rates can I expect?
Published tests using Thunderbolt 5 and a compatible NVMe SSD achieved over 7000 MB/s read and 6500 MB/s write speeds. Actual speeds will depend on the connection, cable, SSD, workload, temperature, and system environment.
[Cooling] How does the cooling system work?
The CNC-machined aluminum housing, ventilation openings, silicone thermal pad, and temperature-controlled fan dissipate heat. The fan starts and regulates itself automatically for stable continuous performance.
[Connections] Does the case require a power supply?
No. Power is supplied via the Thunderbolt/USB4 cable.
[Furnishings] How do I install an NVMe SSD?
Open the cover with the screwdriver. Insert the M.2 2280 NVMe SSD at an angle of approximately 15°, screw it in place, and apply the thermal pad. Close and screw the cover back on.
[Furnishings] How do I connect the TBE-X5Pro to my computer?
After installing the SSD, connect the enclosure to Thunderbolt or USB4 using the 80 Gbps USB-C cable. The drive will then appear in the operating system. New SSDs may need to be initialized and formatted.
